Manitoba Paint Horse Club Year End Meeting
November 24th, 2013
Thunderbird Horse Centre, Brandon Manitoba
Attendees- 9
The meeting started off with a short presentation from Niel Mccloud, owner of Thunderbird Horse Centre. He discussed the information from a meeting at the Provincial Exhibition Office in regards to the Brandon Winter and Summer Fairs. The Winter Fair is predominately English discipline dominated; gearing to get more Western classes and competitors. Discussed a 3 and 4 year old ranch and cutting horse futurity, hoping to add $5,000 to a pot. The proposal was for small groups/clubs to each raise $1,000 "side pots" and in our case, that would be for APHA horses only in regards to this possible futurity. Also, possibly for Manitoba bred paints only. Possibly for 2014, more likely 2015. A social fundraising event would be held to help raise funds. Volunteers would also be needed to move cattle, be scribes, advertise, attend meetings, etc... Any breeders to pay into this futurity would receive breeder/trainer/sire advertising; This is still very much in the works, and the MPHC may or may not be a part of this.
We went over our two events held in 2013. This first show was held in Oak Lake, and was wildly successful with approximately 50 entries. The Selkirk show was not very successful, as the date was chosen well in advance, and an AQHA show was held in Brandon the same weekend (we had chosen our date prior to them) . It was decided that Selkirk would not be a 2014 location for a show due to lack of support in the area. Oak Lake will be held again as an Open, PAC approved show on July 19th, 2014. We also discussed our sponsors for these 2 shows, and the Gold and Silver Level sponsors will be advertised through 2014. We also discussed the possibility of hosting a clinic to demonstrate appropriate showing etiquette, rules, etc... for people wishing to learn more and contribute. This went hand in hand with the discussion of the MPHC having a Showcase Futurity for yearlings- Breeders wishing to pay in can do so (this pay-in would include a yearly membership) and ANY foals born on the farms paid in would be eligible to come back as a yearling to show in a futurity halter class, to be held at one of our yearly shows. It would currently be open to all breeds, and in the future be geared to just APHA foals. A paper regarding this will be written up for discussion by our board by December 15th.
APHA approved trail rides were also discussed, with the possibility of two being held for 2014. One possibly in Birds Hill Park, the second possibly in Souris.
Memberships were disscused, we will be adding youth memberships (18 and under) to the forms. They will be $15.
2014 Raffle- 1st Prize will be a 2013 weanling, to be donated by Hillcrest Stables in Pierson, Manitoba. Foal will be decided by the breeder, once their foals are born. Should the 1st place winner be a supporter of the MPHC and not a horse person, and option of a $250 cash pay out for 1st place will be awarded. 2nd place will be a framed print of artwork, donated by Bonnie Hamlin. 3rd Place will be 5 bags of Sweet Feed. Tickets will be $5 Each, or 3 for $10 (as they were last year) 1000 tickets will be printed. The draw date will hopefully be in coordination with the pending 2014 trail ride in Birds Hill Park (August perhaps). Dates to be announced.
Naomi had attended the Manitoba Horse Council meeting, and went ove all the insurance options, and rates for 2014. The MHC has a new Ride and Drive Reward Program to log in hours of riding or driving your horse, and to recieve prizes and awards for your horse time. All entrants to be showing or riding at any MPHC events will be REQUIRED to have Manitoba Horse Council Insurance, as it is mandatory. If people choose not to have this, they will not be allowed to participate in events hosted by the MPHC.
Voted in for 2014:
President- PJ Frazer
Vice President- Naomie Rodgers
Treasurer- Toni Stoddart
Secretary- Kendall Weslak
This will be the 3rd consecutive year for these members, so this will be their final year in these positions as APHA only allows for 3 consecutive years. We also agreed to have a person in charge of our website and managing our advertising. Jenna Lawrence was voted in to take care of this.
